Circular Timber Greenhouse™
A timber greenhouse built from sawmill offcuts used as structural members. Every component is designed for disassembly and reassembly (DfD). Parametric Modular Design transforms unutilized materials into scalable architectural structures.
Issue
Approximately 45% of domestically produced timber goes unutilized, discarded or incinerated as waste. Valuable forestry resources are going to waste, contributing to CO2 emissions.
Approach
XENCE developed the Circular Timber Greenhouse™ to reuse unutilized timber generated at sawmills as architectural resources. Adopting a fully disassemblable and reassemblable modular design, the system transforms local unutilized timber into carbon-sequestering architectural resources, establishing a circular model for construction.
Result
Compared to steel-framed greenhouses, the structure sequesters approximately 1,000 tonnes or more of CO2 per hectare. By utilizing local unutilized timber, the project reduces dependence on imports and makes environmental performance — including CO2 sequestration and storage — visible as non-financial information, proposing a model for sustainable local economies and forest regeneration.
The greenhouse is available for purchase across Japan and in the Netherlands. For details, please visit our website:
